"Every god falls at the hands of a mortal. Only then can immortality end."
The Malagasy Empire conquers one free city after another. After the arrival of the soldiers, a purge takes place, in which anyone who poses a threat to the empire is ruthlessly eliminated. Now the Empress's target is the rich and ancient city-state of Darujhistan. However, not only the Malažené, but also gods and members of other ancient races have their eyes fixed on him. In the first part, an uncompromising chess game is played, taking place on a huge playing field with a large number of players who change the rules as needed. All credit Steven Erikson is an incredible storyteller with a rich imagination. For an inexperienced reader, it can be quite chaotic to navigate the book at first. The reader is mercilessly thrown into a new universe and whirlwind of events. This can be confusing, but worth persevering with. The author presented an incredibly realistic and intricate story that does not mess with anyone. There are many characters, but thanks to the excellently drawn characteristics, you will easily remember each of them. Everyone has their own motivations, no one is perfect, and even positive heroes sometimes do really bad things. The end often justifies the means. I must not forget the dark atmosphere, which only enhances the overall impression of the book. Steven Erikson laid the foundation stone of an incredibly comprehensive saga, which proves with its quality that fantasy is definitely not dead.
