Midnight Waves was a big surprise for me. Steven Erikson left the familiar environment and set out on a journey through space-time to another continent and another time. After endless fighting, the Tiste Edur tribes are finally united under the rule of the Hirotite warlock Hannan Mosag. He wants to restore the lost glory of his people, so he decides on a dubious alliance with higher powers. Having succeeded in enslaving most of the neighboring tribes, the wealthy kingdom of Leder now sets its sights on the Edura. This self-confident kingdom does not accept failure and looks for the slightest excuse for a fall and war conquest. The inevitable clash between the Eduras and the Lederans is about to begin. This time, the author presents us with an incredibly complex story, which is mainly based on heroes. They are guided by their own motivations, which is why a large number of personal stories, dramas and tragedies take place against the background of the clash of two different cultures. In particular, the Sengar brothers on the side of the Edurs, whose counterpart are the Beddikt brothers, get the most space. Each of them is a unique individual, carrying their own desires, losses, victories and demons. The character of each of them is portrayed so perfectly that you simply believe it. This time, too, the author incorporated a lot of emotions into the story, big battles, intrigues, desires, hopelessness, magic, love, hatred, madness and betrayal. The deadly games of gods and mortals are in full swing and many secrets are coming to the surface. The heroic plot lines are relieved this time by the irresistibly comic story of Tehol Beddikt and his servant Bug, which to my surprise works quite well. I haven't laughed like that in a long time. Their dialogues are, in a word, simply brilliant. Steven Erikson once again proved that quality dark fantasy is not dead.
