The book Ancient windows from Stupava.\nThe oldest evidence of an earthquake in Slovakia\ndeals with finds uncovered during archaeological\nexcavations of a building complex from the Roman\nPeriod in Stupava. Attention was drawn especially\nto the masonry, which did not crumble away grad-\nually as in medieval castles, but fell to the ground.\nSimilar finds are known from the nearby ancient\nCarnuntum, where they were interpreted as the\nconsequences of an earthquake from the middle\nof the 4th century AD. The earth tremors also de-\nstroyed the estate in Stupava, less than 20 km away.\nThe book brings information about the historical\nbackground of the construction of this estate, the\nrelationships of the Romans with the Germans\nliving in the vicinity, and archaeological finds tes-\ntifying to its demise after the mentioned natural\ndisaster. The reader will also learn about the rescue\nand restoration of one of the walls, which included\ntwo windows – the oldest known windows from the\nSlovak territory – as well as about other exceptional\narchaeological finds from Stupava, which bring the\nbuilding complex into a broader context.
