This study is a bold attempt to unravel the knotted issue of whether Marx' work contains a coherent moral theory. Sweet answers in the affirmative, basing his conclusion upon a novel reading of Marxian anthropology which emphasizes the normative importance for Marx of the virtue of beneficence. His work is a unique and refreshing contribution to an area of scholarship which by and large has been monopolized by positivistic denials that Marx was concerned with moral analysis. Sweet has persuasively challenged that dogma. (Kerry S. Walters, Gettysburg College)
