Jako v případě každé autobiografie je patrná jistá dvojlomnost: nikdo nemůže podat přímé svědectví autentičtěji, než autor sám. Na druhé straně nikdo nemůže autorovi zabránit v tom, aby jeho svědectví nebylo ryze subjektivní. Přes tato pro a proti je Chaplinův životopis dramatickou výpovědí o době, v níž žil a tvořil.
