It is a very difficult book to read - the writer uses dialects of the Wild West (and Spanish also). But it is definitely one of the greatest books of our times. It can also get quite philosophical - it is not your typical western about cowboys and indians, it contains intelectual reflections on the nature of death, war, life etc., there are also many references to literature and American and Mexican history (I recommend you this website to orientate yourself a little: (url)/books/blood-meridian/9780330510943/bookmarks-1-25.html?bookId=1334) . It is also very violent book - the basic theme of this book is evil, war and violence - commited by scalphunters and indians alike, the gruesome things that happen in this book are not there for the sake of entertainment or to shock the reader, rather they are just part of the theme of the book - they are ilustrative to what the author wants to say.
The main character, the kid, is little bit blunt - the most fascinating character being the main 'antagonist' - the impersofinication of evil, judge Holden... What bothered me a little were sometimes repetitive passages describing the country through which the gang was travelling - sure it was a fascinating country but too much of anything is just too much... schovat popis
