Not as good as the first book in the series. Maybe the curse of the second volume? I had to rank it with four stars just because I love the central character - Odd Thomas. The central story is also great, the character of Datura who is obsessed with everything supernatural to the point of total self-destruction was one of the best villains I have met in a novel, containing in her the purist evil, abhorrent madness and sexual attractiveness of a succubus.
What is not present in this novel that I greatly enjoyed in the first one is the social dimension - all the relation that Odd has are not present to such an extent as they were in the first book.
The biggest flaw of this book is the slow progress in the passages where Odd tracks Datura and her gang to the Panamint casino - I was a little bit bored by lengthy descriptions of his travels through different tunnels and shafts etc.
